Born in Manchuria and educated in Japan, Kurita first began working as a photographer for an advertising agency in Tokyo in the 1960s. From there he worked as a freelance commercial photographer until the early 1980s. In 1990, a grant from the Asian Cultural Council enabled him to focus on his artistic work, and he had his first solo exhibition in the United States.
In 1993 Kurita moved from Japan to live permanently in New York, but he has travelled extensively, taking photographs throughout North America and Europe. His work is focused on the natural world, such as in the Hydrosphere, Terrasphere and Atmosphere series. Although his work captures the beauty of nature, his concerns are not so much environmental as philosophical. His photographs are held in collections around the world including the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, George Eastman House, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
